Explain how the images will be made and used

Tell the provider whether the shoot is personal or commercial, how many people are aboard and which roles they have. A photographer accompanying a leisure charter has different needs from a team with lighting, wardrobe and production equipment. The operator should understand the activity before confirming that the proposed yacht is suitable.

Separate essential shots from ideas that would be nice to attempt. A portrait at rest, an underway sequence and an external image from another boat are not the same setup. The latter may require additional suppliers and coordination. A clear brief helps avoid selecting a vessel that looks right but cannot support the practical work.

Use Marseille scenery without overcommitting the route

Harbour architecture, islands and the open coast give different visual contexts. Ask the skipper which direction can work with the planned hours and light on the actual date. A route through a protected area or towards a particular cliff setting should not be treated as unrestricted access for every production activity.

Keep an alternative visual plan if the chosen side of the coast is exposed. The yacht may need to change orientation or location for comfort and safety, and shooting should adapt to that decision. Build time for leaving the berth, preparing the deck and returning; the full charter duration is not continuous camera time.

Check the yacht’s usable working areas

Request current images of the actual cockpit, deck and interior spaces. Consider where people can stand without obstructing the crew, where bags can be secured and whether there is a private changing area. Sails, rigging and moving equipment on a sailing yacht introduce different working constraints from those of an open motor yacht.

Provide an equipment list and ask about permitted weight, storage and power use. Stands and cases need a secure plan, and heavy items should not be assumed easy to move along a narrow walkway. Drone filming requires its own rules and operational assessment; hiring a yacht does not itself authorise an aircraft operation.

Agree responsibilities and the commercial scope

Appoint one person to liaise with the skipper so production instructions do not compete with navigation. Ask when setup can begin, how a delay affects the agreed hours and whether crew assistance beyond normal charter duties is included. The yacht’s permitted passenger number must account for the whole team, not only the people appearing on camera.

The proposal should identify the vessel, departure, hours and approved production activity, with any extra support listed separately. Review weather changes and equipment responsibilities before confirming. A model preference can start the enquiry, but the verified vessel’s configuration and the operator’s agreement determine whether the shoot can proceed as planned.

Departure questions to settle

Can we film while the yacht is sailing?

Describe the intended shots. The skipper must decide how filming can fit safe operation, and the crew should not be expected to perform manoeuvres solely for the camera without prior agreement.

Are commercial shooting permits included?

No. Any permissions required for the specific activity and location must be identified and arranged separately with the appropriate parties.
